The Pre-Draft

The story of the Pre-Draft, because calling it a rough draft is too good for it.

I wrote over 2000 words today. Talk about shoveling shit. Very little of what I wrote will ever see the light of day.

I don’t know how this happens, but sometimes I get stuck writing the same series of actions over and over. Today, everyone, and I mean everyone, needed to look, gape, peer, look again, glance, and look, over and over. I couldn’t stop myself. It was bad… But, I got my words and printed up the chapter to prepare it for surgery. When I write a section this bad, I refer to it as my pre-draft.

The Pre-draft is the blasphemous, unholy insult to a rough draft that comes after an outline but before anything you might want to claim as your own. There is so much bad writing in this mass of ill-used words, I need to attack it with a pen, scribble in the margins, and find a way to make to love it as a creator should. There are days you just forget how to write. Your mind numbs over and all you can produce is; she looked, then he looked, so they looked….

Blah.

Tomorrow is Christmas Day, so I will open presents with my family, celebrate goodwill to all men, and find time to kill my not-so-darling with malicious intent.

Happy Holidays!

Professional Jealousy: Good or Bad?

I’ve heard many counsel to avoid professional jealousy towards your fellow writers. However, we are human beings and when you see someone achieve a goal you’ve been working at, you can’t help but get a little annoyed and jealous of them. That isn’t to say you can’t also be incredibly happy for them at the same time.
